Available Vignette Types

Austria offers three standard vignette durations for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. Each is available in physical (sticker) and digital (number-plate-linked) formats. The correct choice depends on the length and frequency of your visits.

10-Day Vignette — €9.90

Valid for exactly 10 consecutive days from the selected start date. Ideal for short holidays, weekend trips, or transit journeys. Cannot be extended; a new vignette is required for longer stays.

  • Best for: tourists, transit travellers
  • Physical and digital available
  • Start date selectable (digital)

2-Month Vignette — €29.00

Valid for 2 calendar months from the first day of the selected month. Suitable for extended stays or frequent visits. Validity is by calendar month, not 60 days.

  • Best for: extended visitors, seasonal workers
  • Example: April purchase = valid 1 Apr – 31 May

Annual Vignette — €103.80

Valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year (~14 months). Most cost-effective for residents and frequent travellers. Physical stickers are colour-coded by year.

  • Best for: residents, commuters, frequent travellers
  • ~14 months validity (Dec–Jan overlap)

Glossary: Key Terms

Vignette (Autobahnvignette)
A toll permit for Austrian motorways and expressways. Available as a physical sticker or digital registration.
ASFINAG
Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft — the federal company that operates and finances Austria's motorway network.
Maut
The general German/Austrian term for road toll. The vignette is one form of Maut; special tolls (Sondermaut) apply to specific roads.
Digital Vignette (Digitale Vignette)
A vignette registered to a vehicle's number plate in the ASFINAG database, introduced in 2018. No physical sticker is required.
Special Toll (Sondermaut)
An additional toll charged on specific roads, tunnels, or mountain passes, separate from and in addition to the vignette requirement.
Validity Period
The date range during which a vignette is legally valid. Varies by type: 10 days, 2 calendar months, or approximately 14 months for annual.
GO-Maut
The electronic toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in Austria, using an on-board unit (OBU) rather than a vignette.
Organmandat
An on-the-spot fine issued by enforcement officers for minor traffic offences, including driving without a valid vignette.
